Request for Training Proposals

The ABA/NLADA Conference Design Team invites you to submit a training proposal for the 2007 Equal Justice Conference. This conference is designed to bring together all components of the legal community concerned about and involved with the delivery of CIVIL legal services to the poor. We are making a concentrated effort this year to increase the number of private lawyers (whether board members, bar leaders, law firm representatives or volunteer attorneys), judges, and other “partners” who attend and participate in the conference.

The title of the 2007 Equal Justice Conference is JUSTICE IN A CHANGING, DIVERSE WORLD: Preserving the Rule of Law Through Inclusive, High Quality Legal Services to the Disadvantaged. Conference programming will examine ways the private bar and the legal services community have come together to make a difference for a broad range of clients who have nowhere else to turn to gain effective, quality access to the legal system. There will be a particular focus on strategies for improving delivery of services to those clients.

Attendees will have over 80 workshops from which to choose, including those focused on expanding pro bono, innovative delivery systems, resource development, substantive law, community lawyering, holistic advocacy, and much more.

To ensure that we provide the most meaningful programming possible, we are asking various conference and community constituents to submit workshop ideas. We are seeking two types of proposals:

 Detailed workshop proposals that include the program’s title, description, presenter information and related information. Your proposal will be accepted in whole, in part (e.g. merged with other similar proposals), or not at all. Conference planners will carefully review the relevance of the topic, the diversity of presenters, and the plan for presenting the information in considering your proposal.
 Recommendations for program topics. In this instance, the Conference planners will review your suggestions in the context of other proposals and work to incorporate them as appropriate.

Proposal Guidelines
• Please complete the survey online or if you prefer, fill in and e-mail the attached form to Tamaara Mason-Piquion at masont@staff.abanet.org no later than Friday, September 29, 2006.
• The vast majority of 2007 workshops will be 1.5 hours long. We will consider a very limited number of three-hour programs, but the rationale for requiring a three-hour time slot must be explicitly and strongly articulated.
• Your proposal should incorporate the key elements of the conference theme: justice in a changing, diverse world. One specific goal of the conference is to bring together people with different perspectives in the same room for open dialogue. Proposals that fully integrate pro bono delivery into broader topics will be given special consideration.
• Workshops should be designed with the idea that facilitators will use their expertise to promote discussion and problem solving, rather than simply talking at the audience. The conference planners are particularly looking for proposals that reflect specific methods for insuring an interactive experience, beyond simply including time for questions and answers.
• You should consider the diversity of conference participants and our community as a whole when arranging the faculty and content of your session. It is expected that you will make an affirmative effort to ensure ethnic and gender diverse trainers.
• Not every proposal will be accepted. If similar proposals are received, the Design Team may work with program coordinators to consolidate proposals.
• If your proposal is accepted, ABA/NLADA reserves the right to make changes in the recommended presenters, program and materials.

Materials
All presenters will be required to follow the workshop materials guidelines below.

 An outline presenting the major points of each faculty member shall be completed on a form to be provided to you. Presenters are asked to consolidate these outlines into one coherent document.
 Each workshop presenter must complete a copyright permission form or secure permission from the appropriate author.
 Each workshop presenter must submit a short bio not to exceed 150 words. These bios will be submitted to state agencies when applying for continuing legal education accreditation.

Expenses and Trainer Registration
The conference sponsors will provide meeting space, limited audio-visual equipment, publicity, registration processing, logistical support and session evaluation. Continuing legal education accreditation, processing and reporting will also be provided.

Please note that financial support from ABA/NLADA is extremely limited and session developers, presenters and panelists are expected to support all expenses not described above. Organizations sponsoring a workshop or training session are asked to support other related costs, including travel and lodging, or to assist the trainer(s) with obtaining support.

Session developers and presenters, who attend only their session and no other part of the conference can apply for a “workshop only” conference registration fee waiver. If approved, they should register for the conference so that their contact information is available to program attendees who might want to get in touch with the presenter. Information about how to request and register for a “workshop only” waiver will be provided to the session leader at a later date.

Session developers and presenters who attend any other training session than their own are required to pay the appropriate registration fee.

Any meals or tickets to social events that are part of a full registration fee will be provided to paid, registered session developers and presenters. “Workshop only” registrants who wish to attend the reception or meal functions must purchase tickets to these events. Tickets will be sold on-site.
