Reuben Clark Law School are very pleased to announce the first conference to focus exclusively on teaching interviewing and counseling.
This ground breaking conference is designed to consider seriously and systematically how law schools and clinical programs can be most effective in teaching these skills. The conference will take place on Friday, October 20 and Saturday October 21 at the UCLA School of Law.
The premise of the conference is that interviewing and counseling are essential skills to competent lawyering, and that major strides are being made in our thinking about how best to train students while still in law school. The conference will address fundamental questions about what topics are essential coverage in a course or a clinic that teaches students to interview and counsel clients, the particular challenges of different settings for training students, and introduce a wide range of innovative ideas about ways to enrich our teaching through technology, simulations and feedback mechanisms.
Conference Structure
Each day of the conference will follow a similar pattern of an introductory plenary session followed by two or three breakout panels.
The first day will focus on constructing the basic course. An introductory plenary session will lay the ground work by identifying essential topics that should covered when training students in these skills. This will be followed by breakout groups that deal with teaching interviewing and counseling in particular settings. The second day will focus on innovations in the pedagogy of interviewing and counseling.
This day will introduce conference participants to new technology, sophisticated simulations, innovative ideas about how to capture student performance, and so forth.
