The CLEA Creative Writing Committee is happy to announce that in conjunction with the Mountain West Regional Clinical Conference, CLEA is hosting a workshop on reading and writing for justice. The workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to focus on stories, poems, creative nonfiction and other literary expressions relating to law and justice. The program is designed for creative writers of all experience levels, from novice to advanced. Registration for each workshop is limited to fifteen participants.

Location: Mountain West:  Albuquerque, New Mexico. Thursday, October 4, 1:00 – 5:30; and Friday, October 5, 9:00 – 2:00. (The regional clinic conference begins Friday evening.) It is expected that all writing workshop activities will be held at the Airport Sheraton, which is the conference hotel for the Mountain West Regional Conference.

Workshop Agenda.

The basic components of the workshop will be these:

Readers’ Circles – Participants will be provided with short readings in advance of the workshop.  Readings will consist of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction samples of justice writing. Participants will meet book-group style to discuss the readings.

Writing Workshops – Participants will be introduced to some basic elements of stories (fiction and nonfiction) and of short literary forms (poems, prose poems and flash fiction). Short exercises will be used for practice. Participants will be provided with prompts to help begin the process of writing their own works.

Private Writing Time – Participants will be given time and space to work on their writing projects.

Sharing Time – Participants will come together several times to discuss the writing process and its applicability to their day jobs, and will have the opportunity to share what they have been working on. No one will be required to share work, and no formal feedback will be given.

Professional Viewpoint – Participants will be provided with resources and information about publishing.

On Thursday evening, we hope to be able to gather as a group for dinner.  Local writers are being invited to read and speak (but this will depend on finances).

Practicalities. The cost for each workshop is $65.00, and will include Friday breakfast and lunch plus daily refreshments.
