UC BERKELEY LAW SCHOOL is hiring a Staff Attorney/Clinical Supervisor for its Consumer Justice Clinic.

EBCLC is a non-profit legal services organization, the community-based clinical program for U.C. Berkeley Law School, and one of the Bay Area’s largest and most effective systems disrupters. With a dual service and teaching mission, EBCLC is a racial justice organization committed to building a culturally diverse workplace, centered on an internal Equity and Inclusion Roadmap that outlines the organization’s equity priorities. EBCLC is also an organized workplace, having reached its first collective bargaining agreement this summer. With about 80 staff, 150 law students a year, and a nearly $10 million annual budget, EBCLC is the largest provider of free legal services in Alameda County, providing multimodal, collaborative, and holistic legal services to over 5,000 clients annually and engaging in legislative and policy advocacy at the state and local level.

The Consumer Justice Clinic (CJC) represents and advocates for low-income consumers in a broad range of consumer-related legal problems and helps develop explicitly racial justice focused policy solutions, while simultaneously supervising and training law students. This position requires an excellent advocate with strong writing and organizational skills who has the ability to work well in a fast-paced setting, has experience providing direct legal services to low-income people, and is committed to mentoring the next generation of legal advocates.

Primary Responsibilities

·         Provide advice, counsel and limited scope representation to clients on a variety of consumer issues (i.e., debt collection defense, student loans, car fraud, consumer scams)

  • Represent clients in both debt collection defense and affirmative litigation
  • Supervise clinical law students in the performance of the above duties, including substantive law and skills training, weekly individual and group case reviews, and day-to-day monitoring 
  • Assist with monitoring cases and reporting on grant deliverables 
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Program Director

Minimum Qualifications

  • J.D. degree required, member of the California State Bar in good standing
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral advocacy skills 
  • Excellent time management, priority-setting and organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse range of groups, including people of color, homeless clients, immigrants, non-English speakers, clients with mental disabilities, law students, government employees, elected officials and law school faculty  
  • Ability to manage a demanding case load

Desired Qualifications     

  • Experience with, or knowledge of, eviction defense/unlawful detainer cases
  • Experience with, or knowledge of, consumer protection affirmative cases
  • Prior experience providing direct legal services for low-income communities
  • Fluency in a second language

Salary and Benefits

Starting salary for this exempt position is $68,000 – $90,000 based on law school graduation date, as dictated by the EBCLC salary scale.

Workplace Expectations

Due to COVID19, all EBCLC employees are working remotely. The CJC Staff Attorney and all EBCLC employees will continue to work remotely if California’s Shelter in Place remains in effect, and any necessary use of the office must be pre-approved. The expectation is that the Staff Attorney will work in our office in Berkeley, California when it is safe to do. EBCLC will provide the necessary equipment to fulfill the job responsibilities of working from home.
