GEORGETOWN LAW's Health Justice Alliance Law Clinic seeks a Deputy Director to join the teaching, supervisory, and management team of the law clinic, an innovative medical-legal partnership (MLP) through which law and medical students collaborate to address legal barriers to health for low- income D.C. families through civil legal advocacy.

Job Overview

The Deputy Director and Senior Staff Attorney will join the Health Justice Alliance Law Clinic, a medical-legal partnership (MLP) through which law and medical students collaborate to address legal barriers to health for low-income D.C. families. The Deputy Director will be an essential member of the Clinic’s teaching and management team – providing intensive supervision and instruction to students representing clinic clients in housing, public benefits, education, disability, and family law matters. The Deputy Director will collaborate with the Law Clinic’s Director and Clinical Teaching Fellow to support the development of students’ lawyering skills and identity using clinical pedagogy approaches.

Additionally, the Deputy Director will serve as a primary point of contact for the Law Clinic’s MLP, and will assist the Clinic’s Faculty Director in managing partnerships, case referrals, intakes, case management and reporting systems, medical student rotations, interdisciplinary collaboration, and legal advocacy. The Deputy Director will also assist clients directly through legal representation, brief service, and advice, as well as facilitation of referrals to other legal and social services providers. As a member of the Law Clinic’s senior management team, the Deputy Director will be involved in all aspects of the clinic’s operations throughout the year.

Work Interactions

The Law Clinic forms a core service arm of the HJA’s MLP between the Georgetown University’s Law and Medical Centers, which includes a range of inter-professional education, service, and research initiatives. Students in the Law Clinic represent low-income families who are patients of Georgetown University health clinics in poverty law matters as part of one-semester, ten-credit intensive (nearly full time) clinical experience under the close supervision of the clinic’s staff and clinical teaching fellows.

The Deputy Director will coordinate closely with the Law Clinic’s Director, Clinical Teaching Fellow, and Office Manager and will supervise a team of students each semester. The Deputy Director will also take a leading role in representing the Law Clinic with other partners, engaging with lawyers and non-lawyers as the primary point of contact for the MLP and coordinating closely with staff at other legal nonprofits in the Washington area. As a member of the senior management team, the Deputy Director will also have regular contact with administrative offices within Georgetown – including within the Law Center and Medical Center – such as Finance, Human Resources, and the Clinical Administration Office. Coordinating closely with internal and external stakeholders will be a crucial part of supporting the Law Clinic’s mission of serving low-income clients and assisting potential clients referred to the Law Clinic.
