Community and Economic Development Clinic

Yale Law School seeks applications for the Ludwig Clinical Fellowship, a two-year position beginning on July 1, 2015. The Fellowship is designed for a lawyer with a minimum of four years of relevant practice experience who is interested in preparing for a career in law school clinical teaching. The Fellow will work with the Ludwig Community and Economic Development Clinic (CED).

CED is a semester-long, in-house clinic offered in both fall and spring semesters, with a substantial number of continuing students who have completed the seminar but remain enrolled in the clinic to handle ongoing or new cases. Clients include non-profit and for-profit corporations, community development financial institutions, advocacy organizations, neighborhood associations, governmental entities, social enterprises and merchants associations. Their missions range from building access to financial services among low-income people to bringing arts institutions and grocery stores to chronically under-resourced communities to breaking down barriers to affordable housing development in high-opportunity communities. All our clients share an interest in promoting economic opportunity and mobility among low and moderate-income people.

On behalf of our clients, our students negotiate and draft contracts; provide advice on the tax consequences of deal structures and entity choices; structure and carry out real estate transactions; represent borrowers and lenders in financings; engage in legislative and regulatory advocacy; form for-profit and not-for-profit entities; and resolve land use and environmental issues. The Clinic is open to students from the Schools of Law, Management, Divinity, Forestry and Environmental Studies, Public Health, and Architecture. In addition to representing clients, students in their first semester of the clinic take a seminar which covers federal, state and local policies affecting urban and suburban places; substantive law in tax, real estate development, and corporate governance; and transactional and regulatory lawyering skills, such as negotiation and drafting contracts.

The Fellow’s responsibilities include representing clients, supervising students, assisting in teaching classes, and pursuing a scholarship and research agenda. Candidates must be prepared to apply for admission to the Connecticut bar. (Pursuant to a recent state bar admission amendment, candidates may qualify for admission without examination.) All work will be conducted with the support of the clinical faculty, principally Clinical Associate Professor Anika Singh Lemar.

Candidates must be able to work both independently and as part of a team, and must possess strong written and oral communication skills. Annual salary is $63,000. In addition, the Fellow will receive health benefits and access to university facilities.

The Paul M. Hebert Law Center of Louisiana State University invites applications for a faculty position in the Law Center’s Clinical Legal Education Program to teach and direct the Immigration Law Clinic. This is a full-time position starting in Fall 2015. The position may be tenure-track or contract-track depending on the candidate’s qualifications and professional and academic interests. The Immigration Law Clinic is a five credit, one-semester clinic in which students represent individuals in affirmative asylum, defense of removal, and adjustment of status cases. Louisiana is home to one of the busiest Immigration Courts in Oakdale, Louisiana, as well as an Immigration Court in New Orleans. There is also a large population of individuals in immigration detention facilities throughout the state.

STAR (Sexual Trauma Awareness and Response) and the Law Clinic at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center, Louisiana State University, are collaborating to provide legal representation to victims of sexual assault through a Civil Legal Needs of Sexual Assault Survivors Law Clinic and are seeking a Attorney Supervisor to teach a clinical course, supervise law students in their representation of clinic clients, mentor other staff attorneys in the Advocacy and Legal Services Program of STAR, as well as assist with other administrative tasks necessary in the operations of the Advocacy and Legal Services Program and the Law Clinic.

 

The Attorney Supervisor will be an employee of STAR and may receive a Clinical Adjunct Appointment from the LSU Law Center to teach the Civil Legal Needs of Sexual Assault Survivors Law Clinic and supervise students in their clinical activities. Current grant funding provides for a Civil Legal Needs of Sexual Assault Survivors Law Clinic for the academic calendar years of Fall 2015 through Spring 2017.

 

Classification: 25-32 hrs/wk, Part-Time/Non-Exempt

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

             Provide direct legal representation to survivors of sexual assault, including civil and criminal orders of protection, separation and divorce, child custody and support, spousal support, property, housing, employment issues, privacy and confidentiality issues, Title IX and education issues, campus safety issues, and immigration;

             Develop and deliver Civil Legal Needs of Sexual Assault Survivors Law Clinic curriculum for the academic calendar years of Fall 2015 through Spring 2017;

             Oversee student attorneys through the Civil Legal Needs of Sexual Assault Survivors Law Clinic;

             Mentoring and provide guidance to staff attorney at STAR;

             Respond to requests from clients during and/or after business hours;

             Monitor and follow up on grant objectives;

             Participate in advocacy team meetings, staff meetings and community meetings as requested;

             Assist in developing reports as required by funder(s); and

             Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 

Qualifications:

             Candidates must be licensed to practice in Louisiana with a minimum of 10 years of experience in the practice of law, as well as have demonstrated knowledge, expertise and commitment to social justice and/or victim services work.

             Teaching, mentoring, and supervisory experience is preferred, but not required.

             Candidates must be interested in teaching and supervising law students acting in a representative capacity pursuant to Louisiana Supreme Court Rule XX. 

             Applicant must consent to and successfully complete a full background investigation, which includes a criminal history check and finger printing.

             Applicant must have completed, or will complete in the first year of employment, a mandatory 40 hours of sexual violence training; plus 20 hours of continuing education/training annually.

             Applicant must have the ability to set clear, professional boundaries and the ability to maintain client and agency confidentiality.

             Applicant must have the ability to be self-directed yet work effectively as a team member.

             Applicant must be able to identify and respond to shifting priorities.

             Applicant must have the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and have excellent organizational skills.

             Applicant must have a valid driver’s license, provide own transportation and provide proof of auto insurance.

             Applicant must have the ability to communicate effectively, problem solve, and work well with people from diverse backgrounds.

             Applicants who are bilingual in Spanish/English are highly desired.

The Turner Environmental Law Clinic at Emory University School of Law offers a one-year post-graduate fellowship to provide a recent law school graduate the opportunity to learn to be an effective environmental advocate while working with the Clinic to address some of the most difficult and cutting-edge environmental issues of the day, including: sustainable energy and climate change, sustainable agriculture and urban farming, water resource protection, conservation and land use, and citizen enforcement and participation in regulatory and judicial proceedings. The Turner Environmental Law Clinic fellow will work under the supervision of Clinic faculty on a variety of projects that will include, at a minimum, the following:

• Supervise students in the Turner Environmental Law Clinic and assist with teaching in the Clinic’s seminar class.
• Represent the Clinic’s clients in complex civil litigation, transactional, and policy matters, while working closely with co-counsel, expert witnesses, and municipal leaders.

• Collaborate with Clinic faculty on environmental law and research projects.
The fellow may also choose to research and write at least one article, policy paper, or other approved project of publishable quality on a topic relating to environmental law.

Qualifications: Law school graduate within three (3) years of graduation, excellent research and writing skills, and proven commitment to public service in the area of environmental law.

• Collaborate with LLS faculty who teach business law-related subjects to expand opportunities for students to enroll in classes that offer experiential learning by creating new courses that use a simulated deal format;

Requisite Qualifications:

Applicants are expected to have a distinguished academic background, including a J.D. from an accredited law school, and to have practiced corporate transactional law at a sophisticated level for at least eight to ten years, with extensive experience in venture capital financing transactions, equity incentive arrangements, and mergers and acquisitions, and preferably strong familiarity with both California and Delaware law. Applicants with prior teaching experience are strongly preferred. A significant element of the student experience in enrolling in courses offered in the Business Law Practicum is the opportunity that such classes provide for law students to receive detailed and highly-individualized feedback from the professor on their written work product in a manner that is consistent with what an experienced supervising attorney would provide to junior associates. As a result, extensive experience in supervising and managing junior transactional attorneys is an important aspect of an outstanding candidate’s background, as well as the demonstrated ability to offer professional development guidance to junior associates. Candidates who are licensed to practice law in California are strongly preferred. Given the administrative responsibilities associated with the position of Director of the Business Law Practicum, meaningful administrative or managerial experience is also preferred.
