    Director of Legal Writing

                Chicago-Kent College of Law is seeking outstanding applicants for the position of Director of its Legal Writing Program, one of the oldest and most distinguished in the nation. 

                The Director will teach a section of Legal Writing I and II, and may also teach a doctrinal course in an area of interest.  In addition, the duties of the Director will include 1) training and supervising new first-year legal writing professors; 2) hiring, training and supervising legal writing Teaching Assistants; 3) facilitating pedagogical planning and design of the first-year research and writing course; 4) managing the first-year Legal Writing Program’s budget; 4) coordinating first-year legal research training; 5) participating in first-year legal writing faculty hiring and retention; 6) reviewing course evaluations for all first year sections; 7) addressing student concerns related to the first-year course; and 8) collaborating with the Director of Experiential Learning to achieve continuity and instructional excellence across the legal writing curriculum. 

    The Director will also be expected to promote curricular innovation, participate actively in the law school and legal writing communities, advocate on behalf of the Legal Writing Program internally, promote the Program externally, engage in legal writing or other types of scholarship, and support the scholarly activities of the legal writing faculty.

    Applicants should have a distinguished academic record, at least five years of experience teaching legal writing, and strong leadership, administrative and interpersonal skills.  Supervisory or administrative experience is desirable, but not required.     Director of Experiential Learning

    Chicago-Kent College of Law is seeking outstanding applicants for a new position, Director of Experiential Learning.  This position offers an opportunity to design and implement new experiential and advanced practice skills courses. 

    The Director will coordinate and oversee the upper year legal writing curriculum, which focuses on practice experiences and is taught primarily by practitioners.  The Director will also coordinate the new Praxis Program. The Praxis Program is designed to help students develop those professional competencies that are critical to professional success, but have received little emphasis in the traditional law school curriculum.  The leadership of the Praxis Program will require extensive work with the practice community to maintain and develop connections between the law school and practitioners.  Together, the second year legal writing curriculum and Praxis should help ensure that multiple practitioner experiences are more fully integrated into students’ law school studies.   The Director will be responsible for integrating innovative, experiential, pedagogy into the law school curriculum as a whole, with the aim of ensuring our students are effective, entrepreneurial and ethical legal professionals.  The Director will be expected to coordinate with other skills initiatives at Chicago-Kent, such as the Clinic and Advocacy programs.  In particular, the Director will collaborate with the Director of Legal Writing to ensure continuity and instructional excellence across the legal writing curriculum.  The Director will also be expected to teach in the upper year legal writing and skills curriculum on a recurring basis.

    ENTREPRENEURSHIP LEGAL CLINIC

    CLINICAL SUPERVISOR & LECTURER

    The University of Pennsylvania Law School’s Gittis Center for Clinical Legal Studies invites applicants for the position of Clinical Supervisor and Lecturer in its in-house, live client, transactional law clinic.  The successful applicant will begin no later than July 1, 2014.  The Entrepreneurship Legal Clinic (ELC) was founded in 1982 as one of the nation’s first legal clinics devoted to the study and practice of transactional law.  It serves both for-profit and non-profit organizational clients by placing students in the role of “lead counsel” for economically and socially impactful ventures. 

    The Clinical Supervisor and Lecturer will work closely with the Director of the ELC in all activities, including course planning, teaching, supervising and mentoring law students, representing clients, Clinic administration, and community education, engagement and outreach.

    The Clinical Supervisor will work to challenge ELC students to practice and hone a variety of core competencies that will be critical in their early careers (fact development, framing and analyzing  legal issues, negotiating and drafting, and client counseling), but also to develop critical capacities for exercising judgment, solving problems, cultivating a professional identity, communicating (through a variety of modes) with clients and supervisors, collaborating with peers, and managing projects, people and expectations.

    The position is a contract position that is annually renewable up to a maximum of 5 years.  It is the Clinic’s goal and expectation that the selected candidate will receive training, mentoring, and experience in all aspects of teaching and leading a successful transactional clinic that will enable the individual to pursue a career in legal academia upon completion of service at Penn Law School including starting or directing a transactional law clinic at another law school.

    The successful applicant will be a licensed attorney who has 4+ years of experience in a general business or transactional law practice and demonstrated acumen in business planning and structuring, negotiation, contract drafting, and community engagement.  A record of strong academic achievement, commitment to improving society, and intellectual engagement with entrepreneurship and the law are essential.  Teaching experience (or a passion for teaching), creativity, strategic thinking, and demonstrated ability to work with culturally and economically diverse groups are highly valued.     Clinical Assistant or Associate Professor

    Northern Illinois University College of Law

    Northern Illinois University College of Law anticipates hiring a clinical professor to direct a newly created medical-legal partnership clinic that will be based at Hesed House, a homeless shelter located in Aurora, Illinois (approximately 40 miles from downtown Chicago and 30 miles from DeKalb).

    As the only public law school in Northern Illinois, NIU College of Law has been named a top law school nationally for diversity, value, and careers in public interest/government service.  NIU Law provides unique opportunities for its students, beginning with its highly accomplished faculty who are personally invested in the success of every student throughout their professional lives.  Although many alumni serve as public interest attorneys, prosecutors, defenders, elected officials, and judges, they are equally prepared for careers as solo practitioners or lawyers in multinational firms.

    The goal of the clinic is to work in partnership with health care providers from Aunt Martha’s medical clinic and social workers from Hesed House to identify and remedy socio-environmental issues that may be contributing to a patient’s poor health outcomes.  Issues facing homeless and indigent patients are multifaceted and complex.  Poverty – along with poor health – may increase the level of stress a person is dealing with on a daily basis.  Health issues lead to other stressors, such as insurance problems, missed work, and, perhaps, difficulties performing everyday activities.  Likewise, socio-environmental issues (homelessness, food insecurity, violence) can contribute to poor health outcomes.  These issues are often beyond the scope of a medical doctor, who likely only has the time and resources to treat the underlying medical condition.  Yet it is these very issues that directly affect a person’s health and well-being.  A team of people – medical, legal, and social work professionals – working together in an integrated fashion can begin to address the unmet needs of clients.  Providing more holistic care will not only improve health outcomes, but may also improve life circumstances.

    Principal duties will include the following:

    • n  Supervising and teaching law students in a clinical setting;
    • n  Teaching a medical-legal partnership clinical course;
    • n  Representing clients in a variety of legal settings, which may include housing cases, public benefits, and special education matters;
    • n  Working with community members to promote and develop the medical-legal partnership clinic;
    • n  Working and building relationships with the other partners involved in the medical-legal partnership;
    • n  Working under the supervision of the Director of Clinics and working in partnership with other NIU College of Law clinical faculty members; and
    • n  Engaging with the NIU College of Law and its student body through service to the law school and the University.

    The salary is $60,000-$70,000 annually, depending on skills and experience, plus benefits.

    Required Qualifications:  JD from an ABA-accredited law school; Three years legal experience; and a current Illinois license to practice law.

    Preferred Qualifications: The applicant will preferably have 2-5 years experience representing clients in poverty law matters, such as public benefits and housing cases.  Teaching experience, particularly clinical teaching in a law school setting is also desired.  The preferred applicant will have experience with program development, and will be able to work well with external professional constituencies to build and expand programs to fully realize the vision of the clinic.  Fluency in Spanish is also preferred.

    The Clinical Assistant or Associate Professor will report directly to the Director of Clinics, and will work closely with the Dean and Faculty on the development of the clinic.
