Columbia Law School - Director of Externships

The Director of Externships is a key leadership position responsible for the strategic development, oversight, and administration of Columbia Law School's externship program. We seek a dynamic and creative administrator with experience in higher education or in legal services organizations to ensure that Columbia Law School’s externships and other placement-based learning opportunities are of consistently high quality, further the Law School’s strategic vision, and respond to student interests and community needs. Pending faculty approval, the incumbent may be asked to teach related courses as needed.

The Law School currently offers an extensive program of externships and placement-based learning opportunities designed to help students become knowledgeable, skilled, ethical, and reflective practitioners. Students enrolled in externships have the opportunity to explore the role of lawyers in a variety of settings, identify their own professional goals, and learn the values and competencies that are needed in modern legal practice through well-supervised, hands-on work at public and private sector organizations and in a related seminar. In addition to the externships offered through the program, CLS also permits students to find independent externships that must be paired with a faculty tutorial. The successful candidate will report to the Vice Dean for Experiential Education. We are hoping to fill the position quickly, so we will be accepting applications in real time and reviewing/interviewing on a rolling basis.
