FACULTY EQUITY AND INCLUSION

CLEA created the Committee for Faculty Equity and Inclusion (renamed from the Diversity Committee in 2019) to draw attention to the crisis of diversity among clinical faculties, and to urge law schools to take proactive steps to remedy this longstanding failure. The Committee is co-chaired by Caitlin Barry (barry@law.villanova.edu) and Shobha Mahadev (s-mahadev@law.northwestern.edu). If you have any ideas that might help the Committee succeed, they would be glad to hear from you.

The Committee for Faculty Equity and Inclusion recently published this essay, The Diversity Imperative Revisited: Racial and Gender Inclusion in Clinical Law Faculty, for publication in the September 2019 issue of the Clinical Law Review. The article builds upon the work of Professor Jon Dubin in his nearly 20 year-old article, Faculty Diversity as a Clinical Legal Education Imperative, to examine the progress made since that article’s publication and offer recommendations regarding future data collection and research, as well as best practices for inclusive and accessible clinical faculty hiring.

Additionally, there has been some recent press coverage of the essay and the Committee’s work.
